About Birth at Home Prenatal Classes
Birth at Home prenatal classes were created out of a need for quality education focused on families preparing for home birth. While the prenatal class options for pregnant women and their partners are plentiful, classes focused specifically on home birth preparation seemed scarce, if not non-existent, prior to the development of Birth at Home prenatal classes.
Two well-known and respected birth doulas have drawn on their vast experience of working with birthing families to offer an extensive and practical home birth prenatal course curriculum. We like to think of it as getting practical info “from the trenches.” We aren’t just teaching you something we learned in a training or from a book! You will benefit from everything we’ve learned from sitting through hundreds of births! Attending over a hundred births each, combined with their education in childbirth, has given our instructors a strong, realistic understanding of what you really need to know as you make plans to give birth at home.
Morag Hastings, Instructor | Co-owner
Morag is a doula and birth photographer from Galiano Island off the coast of B.C. where she grew up viewing birth as a normal, natural process. As a mother of three, Morag has first-hand experience in what it’s like to be a birthing woman and new parent. She always shares this insight with extremely refreshing, no-holds-barred honesty and humor. Her work with her busy doula and birth photography business, Apple Blossom Families has not only helped individual families to have more positive births, but also has been hugely successful at increasing awareness of normal birth and breastfeeding practices through her photography.
Jessica is a birth doula and informed choice activist who believes women’s rights to choices about their births are of utmost importance. She strives to promote a gentle and informed birth culture through her free educational blog and by participating in local campaigns to raise awareness about important issues in maternal health care. Her strong ties to both the medical and unassisted / non-medical childbirth communities give her a uniquely well-rounded perspective on the range of options for birthing families. Her educational blog and successful doula business, Birth Takes a Village, is a widely used resource for both doulas and birthing families. She also trains new doulas through the Wise Woman Way of Birth doula certifying program.
Morag and Jessica believe strongly in respecting the normal process of childbirth and in the importance of informed decision making. They believe just as strongly in community and laughter, so expect to make friends and have fun in their classes while getting informed and prepared for your upcoming home birth. In addition to teaching, Jessica and Morag both take on birth doula clients separately and as a team. Talk to them about having them support you during your home birth.
